Tvrdava Sveti Ivan, also known as Kotor Fortress, rises above the historic center of Kotor and offers one of the most iconic views in all of Montenegro. Although the climb is short, be prepared for a steep ascent on stone steps — the reward is a breathtaking panoramic view of the Bay of Kotor, the old town, and the surrounding mountains.

The route starts right in the historic center

The climb begins right by the gates of the old town — most commonly at the North Gate (Vrata od Rijeke). From the small square with the Church of Sveta Marija Koledata, turn left and start up the path between the houses. Just beyond the last buildings, you’ll reach the official entrance and ticket booth. The entrance fee is fairly expensive - €15 (in 2025).

Once inside, a steep climb of more than 1,300 stone steps awaits. The trail winds along the walls and past the remains of the fortifications, passing the Church of Our Lady of Remedy (Crkva Gospe od Zdravlja), which makes a good first rest stop and offers lovely views.

A summit view straight off a postcard

The final stretch leads to the ruins of Sveti Ivan fortress itself (approx. 260 m above sea level), where an unforgettable view opens up over the entire town, the harbor, and the winding Bay of Kotor. The fortress is freely accessible, but moving around its walls and ramparts requires caution — railings are often missing.

Free alternative trail

If you want to avoid the entrance fee or the crowds, you can make the ascent from the other side via the so-called Donkey Trail — an old route that winds across the slopes above the town outside the walls. The trail is also known as the “Ladder of Kotor” and starts just beyond town (map). After about 200 meters of ascent, you’ll come to a right-hand turn that leads to the walls just below the fortress.

Practical tips

  • Best time to go: early morning or before sunset — for both the views and cooler temperatures.
  • Footwear: sturdy shoes are recommended, as the steps can be slippery.
  • Water: bring your own, as there is nowhere to refill along the way.
