Sedlena Greda – a short hike with panoramic views

An adventurous climb to Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m), the highest peak in the Durmitor range and the fourth-highest mountain in Montenegro, is one of the region’s best-known hikes. Because of the exposed sections and rocky terrain, it is better suited to more experienced mountain hikers with sure footing.
The route begins at the small parking area at Sedlo Pass (1,900 m), on the scenic mountain road between Žabljak and Plužine. After a short, easy walk across meadows with views of the surrounding ridges, you reach the first more technical section. The trail climbs steeply and then traverses a narrow path – a rock wall rises on the right, while steep scree slopes drop away on the left. For added safety, this section is secured with steel cables.
After a short steep climb, the trail levels out again and continues as a pleasant path winding between rock outcrops scattered across sun-baked meadows. After about twenty minutes, you pass a turnoff on the right to a spring – this is the only place where you can refill drinking water.
A short descent follows to the small glacial lake Zeleni vir, surrounded by scree slopes.
Beyond the lake, turn right and begin a steep ascent of around 300 vertical metres to the broad grassy saddle of Velika Previja (2,350 m). The pass is an ideal spot for a short rest and a snack before the final climb to Bobotov Kuk.
From the pass, the ascent to the rocky summit of Bobotov Kuk begins. Although it is “only” just under 200 vertical metres, this section is the most exposed and technically demanding part of the entire hike. The trail leads through rocky terrain, often directly above deep drop-offs, and is protected by steel cables.
In dry conditions and good visibility, the climb usually does not pose any major problem – sometimes local dogs even join hikers along the way. In wet weather or fog, however, do not underestimate the need for caution.
The view from Bobotov Kuk is fantastic. Spread out before you are the Durmitor peaks of Prutaš, Veliki Medjed, Sedlena greda, Terzin Bogaz, and many others. Deep below, Malo and Veliko Škrčko Lake shimmer in the landscape, while to the north you can make out Žabljak and the edge of Crno Jezero.
The return follows the same route. In wet weather or fog, be very careful, especially on the exposed sections above the drop-offs.
By car
Drive along a narrow paved road to the parking area at the pass. There is usually a parking fee and an entrance fee for Durmitor National Park.
By bus
Take a bus from Podgorica to Žabljak, the main tourist centre of Durmitor. There is no bus connection to the pass, so your only option is to find an affordable taxi driver in Žabljak.
You can try looking up timetables here, but take them with a grain of salt:
The Lednički izvor spring is about 2.2 km from the start of the hike. Water from Zeleni Vir lake is usable after filtering.
