The ascent of Mali Međed (2,228 m) and Veliki Međed (2,287 m) is one of the more demanding hikes in the Durmitor range. Expect a very steep climb, rocky and exposed sections, several stretches with fixed steel cables, and superb views.
The hike starts at Black Lake (Crno jezero), which is easily reached on foot or by car from Žabljak. From the lake, follow the marked trail toward Katun Lokvice – the first part is a comfortable path with a gentle uphill gradient.
After leaving the forest, at roughly 1,800 m, you will reach a junction. The main route continues through the valley toward Katun Lokvice, but here you turn left and begin the ascent to Mali Međed. The climb is very steep and crosses scree as well as slippery, muddy sections. It is not technical climbing, but you will still need to use your hands now and then.
From the summit of Mali Međed, there are magnificent views of Black Lake, Žabljak, Savin Kuk, and the surrounding rocky ridges.
From the top of Mali Međed, the route continues along the ridge toward Veliki Međed. This is the most technical part of the entire hike, crossing rocky terrain that is narrow and exposed in places. You should be comfortable on rocky ground and have sure footing.
The ridge rises and falls repeatedly, with several sections where you move directly over rock blocks or along narrow limestone ledges. In the more difficult places, fixed steel cables are installed for support, which greatly improve safety, especially in wet conditions.
The ridge offers outstanding views: below you on the right lies the Lokvice valley, behind you towers the massive wall of Mali Međed, and in the distance you may even spot the highest peak in Durmitor – Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m).
Once past the most exposed section, the terrain eases slightly and the final few dozen metres to Veliki Međed follow a broader ridge.
From the summit of Veliki Međed, descend to the Velika Previja saddle (2,145 m) and from there to the shepherd huts at Katun Lokvice (1,800 m), where you can sometimes buy a beer or something to eat from the shepherd. From there, continue on the marked trail back to Black Lake.
The hike to the Međed peaks is a great choice for more experienced mountain hikers who want to enjoy the wild side of Durmitor without the crowds, with excellent views and fun rocky sections.
