Hike description

The hike to the Buni i Jezerce Lakes is one of the most beautiful routes in the Montenegrin part of the Prokletije range. An ideal choice for anyone who wants to enjoy wild mountain scenery without a demanding summit climb.

Start from Vusanje

The hike starts in Vusanje, a small Montenegrin village near the Albanian border. Right by the parking area you’ll find Grlja Waterfall, where the stream disappears into a narrow karst canyon.

From the parking area, continue through the Ropojana Valley. After about 1.5 km of gentle ascent, you’ll reach Oko Skakavice – a broad karst spring fed by an icy underground river.

Shortly afterwards, you’ll come to a hut where you pay the entrance fee to Prokletije National Park.

Climb to Zastan shepherd’s hut

After roughly 2.5 km of gradual uphill walking, you’ll reach a junction where the trail turns left and begins a steeper climb toward Zastan shepherd’s hut.

Zastan shepherd’s hut (approx. 1350 m) is often used by shepherds during the season, and nearby there is a spring – the last reliable source of drinking water.

From here, the path continues through the forest up to mountain meadows. The ascent gains around 450 vertical metres, but it is not particularly difficult.

Buni i Jezerce Lakes – the hidden heart of Prokletije

After climbing to approximately 1800 m above sea level, a broad grassy valley opens up, enclosed by steep walls and lined with jagged peaks. In its lower section lie several small glacial lakes, some of which dry out during the hot summer months – for the lakes at their best, we recommend coming in June or early July.

The border between Montenegro and Albania runs just beyond the lakes. For a standard visit to the lakes, no permit is needed (according to information available online); it is enough to carry a valid ID. If you plan to cross into Albania, an official permit is required.

Return the same way

From the Buni i Jezerce valley, return along the same route back to Vusanje.

Useful info

By bus

Take a bus to the town of Berane, from where buses frequently run to Gusinje, a small town about 6 kilometres from the start of the hike in Vusanje.

You can try checking timetables here, but take them with a grain of salt:

Spring above Zastan shepherd’s hut. After that, only filtered water from the lakes.
