Prokletije

Prokletije, meaning the “Accursed Mountains,” are one of Europe’s wildest and least-known mountain ranges. Straddling the borders of Montenegro, Albania, and Kosovo, they are known for extraordinarily dramatic scenery—jagged rocky peaks, deep canyons, crystal-clear lakes, and dense beech forests. If you’re looking for an authentic mountain adventure far from the main tourist trails, hiking in Prokletije will absolutely captivate you.

Highest peaks – Zla Kolata and Maja Jezerce

The highest peak in the Montenegrin part of the range—and in all of Montenegro—is Zla Kolata (2,534 m). The ascent is more demanding, but rewards you with fantastic panoramic views over the whole of Prokletije and the surrounding mountains.

The highest summit of the entire range, Maja Jezerce (2,694 m), lies on the Albanian side, but it is often climbed from the Montenegrin village of Vusanje. Reaching Maja Jezerce is one of the biggest hiking challenges in the wider area and offers magnificent views across vast wild mountain landscapes.

Popular hikes – Volušnica, Očnjak, and the valley of lakes

An excellent outing with unforgettable views is the summit of Volušnica (1,879 m), usually reached from the Grebaje valley. It is a moderately demanding climb with superb views of the dramatic rock wall of Karanfili.

Another popular hike in the area is the ascent of the iconic rock tower Očnjak (2,185 m), which dominates the Grebaje valley. The route is short but technically demanding, best suited to experienced hikers with sure footing.

Another exceptionally beautiful area is the lake pearls of Buni i Jezerce, hidden high in the mountains on the Albanian side of the range. This hike is also most commonly started from the Montenegrin village of Vusanje. It is one of the finest routes in the whole range and offers an unforgettable experience in a wild mountain landscape.

Springs and karst sources

Prokletije also offers several beautiful and easily accessible places down in the valleys. Among the most interesting are the water springs of Alipašini izvori and the popular karst spring Oko Skakavice, known for its icy-clear water and beautiful turquoise color. Both spots are ideal for easy walks and relaxing in nature.

Traverses and multi-day hikes

Prokletije is also a perfect destination for more demanding treks and multi-day traverses. Especially popular are cross-border routes between Montenegro and Albania, leading over high mountain passes, past alpine tarns, and through traditional shepherd settlements, offering a chance to experience the authentic culture of the Balkans.

Why visit Prokletije?

Prokletije is an ideal choice for those seeking adventure, peace, and almost untouched mountain nature. Thanks to its relative remoteness, you’ll encounter far fewer tourists here and get to experience true wilderness, where the original atmosphere of the Balkans still survives. Deep valleys, sharp peaks, and rich mountain flora and fauna create a unique mix of experiences that few European ranges can offer.

Practical information for visiting Prokletije

The ideal hiking season in Prokletije runs from June to September, when even the higher mountain passes are usually snow-free and passable. Although trail marking is steadily improving, we still recommend carrying GPS navigation or a good hiking map. There are not many mountain huts or refreshment stops in the area, so it’s wise to bring plenty of water and enough food. Entry to the national park is usually subject to a fee.

Head to Prokletije and discover the true mountain wilderness of the Balkans—a place that will surprise you with its beauty, authenticity, and rugged charm.
