Velebit is Croatia’s largest and most diverse mountain range, stretching dramatically along the Adriatic coast. This limestone massif is one of the wildest and most fascinating parts of the country, with towering rock faces rising steeply above the sea and offering unforgettable views of the water, islands, and Croatia’s inland landscapes.
The northern part of Velebit is excellent for hiking, with well-marked trails leading across mountain meadows, deep forests, and rocky summits. One of the most popular routes here is the Premužić Trail, considered one of Croatia’s most beautiful long-distance paths. It offers stunning panoramic views, passes through wild nature reserves, and is suitable even for less experienced hikers.
Among the best-known peaks of Northern Velebit is Zavižan, where you’ll also find a mountain hut and a botanical garden with views of the islands of Rab, Krk, and Cres.
The southern part of Velebit is best known for Paklenica National Park, home to the famous Velika Paklenica Canyon, a favorite destination for climbers from around the world. Visitors can admire steep rock walls, waterfalls, mountain streams, and a wide range of beautiful trails leading all the way to the highest peak of the range, Vaganski vrh (1,757 m).
A great alternative is the ascent of Sveti Brdo (1,751 m), which rewards you with fantastic views of the sea, islands, and rugged mountain scenery.
Velebit is one of the best mountain ranges in Croatia for multi-day crossings and treks. The entire ridge can be crossed over several days, using mountain huts and simple shelters along the way. This kind of traverse lets you fully experience the beauty and variety of the range – from northern forests and grassy plains, across rocky summits, to the wild southern section with views over Dalmatia.
Velebit is a true adventure: deep canyons, wild rock formations, karst caves, beautiful forests, flower-filled meadows, and breathtaking views over the Adriatic. On your hikes, you may also come across remarkable wildlife, including bears, deer, and rare bird species.
The best time for hiking in Velebit is from May to October. Trail marking is good, but we still recommend carrying a map or GPS. Drinking water can be scarce in the mountains, so always bring an adequate supply. Some areas, such as Paklenica National Park and Northern Velebit National Park, require an entrance fee.
Set out for Velebit and discover the charm of Croatia’s mountains, where rugged alpine beauty meets the scent and sweeping views of the sea. It’s a combination that guarantees experiences you won’t soon forget.
