Hike description

Téry Hut is one of the most popular mountain huts in the High Tatras. It stands at an elevation of 2,015 metres, making it the fifth-highest hut in this mountain range.

The hut was built in 1899 and named in honour of the distinguished Hungarian physician and climber Edmund Téry, who played an important role in the development of hiking and mountaineering in the High Tatras. In its immediate surroundings, you will find a group of five glacial tarns known as the Five Spiš Tarns (Päť Spišských plies). Téry Hut is a welcome place to rest after the long ascent from Starý Smokovec or Tatranská Lomnica, and it provides facilities for hikers and climbers heading for routes in the area, for example to Lomnický Peak, Prostredný hrot or Priečne Saddle.

Hike to Téry Hut

The hike to Téry Hut is a popular route leading from Starý Smokovec via Hrebienok and the Malá Studená dolina valley. The trail to the hut is not technically difficult and is well marked. Along the way, you can admire many natural highlights, including the Studený Potok waterfalls, rock formations, and alpine flora. With a bit of luck, you may even spot a chamois or other mountain wildlife.

There are plenty of places to rest and grab a bite on the way. You can stop for refreshments at Bilík Hut, Rainer Hut, or a little farther on at Zamkovský Hut.

Higher up, magnificent views of the surrounding peaks open up, rewarding the effort of the climb. The hike to Téry Hut is an unforgettable experience, combining a physical challenge with the chance to enjoy the beauty of Slovakia’s High Tatras.

A fit mountain hiker will need around four hours of moving time for the ascent. Allow about 2:45 hrs for the descent. If you want to shorten the ascent or descent a little, you can use the funicular to Hrebienok.

Where to go next?

From Téry Hut, you can continue on the green trail to Sedielko Saddle (2,376 m) and descend into Javorová dolina, following it all the way to Tatranská Javorina. If you take the yellow trail, you will first climb to Priečne Saddle (2,352 m) and then descend to Zbojnícka Hut (1,960 m) in the Veľká Studená dolina valley. From Zbojnícka Hut, you can descend back to Starý Smokovec.

Accommodation at Téry Hut

The hut offers accommodation in several rooms with a total capacity of around 24 beds. Food and drinks are also available, which is a welcome refreshment after a demanding day in the mountains. Téry Hut is known for its friendly atmosphere and stunning views of the surrounding Tatra peaks. It is open year-round, although access in winter can be more complicated due to snow and avalanche danger.
