The High Tatras are Slovakia’s only mountain range with a true alpine character, making them especially popular with fans of high-mountain hiking and climbing. You’ll find 26 peaks rising above 2,500 metres here, along with many more over the 2,000-metre mark.
In the High Tatras, you can hike up eight peaks: Kriváň, Predné Solisko, Kôprovský štít, Rysy, Východná Vysoká, Slavkovský štít, Veľká Svišťovka, and Jahňací štít.
The highest peak in the High Tatras — Gerlachovský štít (2,655 m) — as well as Lomnický štít, Ladový štít, Satan, Vysoká, and many others, can only be climbed with a mountain guide.
The options for high-mountain hiking are expanded by ascents to mountain passes, which are often no easier than climbing the peaks themselves. Among the most popular and demanding are the ascent through Malá Studená dolina past Téryho chata, using iron rungs and chains, to Priečne sedlo, or the route through Veľká Studená dolina to Prielom saddle. You’ll also come away with great memories from the hike to Bystrá lávka, which links the Mlynická and Furkotská valleys above Štrbské Pleso.
